If the speech has more than one part, we place quotation marks around each part. Each new piece of speech begins with a capital letter: “W e can’t trust Anansi ,” the animals said. “H e is a trickster. ”

Possessive nouns

We use apostrophes to show that something belongs to someone or something. For singular nouns we add ’s to the end of the noun: the son of Anansi è Anansi ’s son For singular nouns ending in ‘s’, we put an apostrophe after the ‘s’: the arms of the octopus è the octopu s’ arms

•  Exercise 4: Students can read the sentences first to identify the speech. Then work through a couple of examples on the board before students complete the exercise on their own. DA  Allow some students to write only part of the dialogue.
