Book report

When you write a report on a story or book you have read, you should summarise the plot, describe the characters and state your personal reaction. Remember that when you state an opinion about a book or a character, you must always provide reasons or evidence to support what you say.

Write a report of the story on pages 68–69. 1

Use an organiser like the one below to make notes for your report. Title and author’s name ‘The Pot of Wisdom’, by Al Campbell Setting Plot Main events: Main character Description: Characteristics: Other characters Names: Role in story: Personal response

In your personal response you can include: • Your opinion of the characters • Your favourite part of the book or story • Interesting words and phrases used by the author

Write the first draft of your report. Revise it and write a neat copy.

You could present your response to stories and books you have read in different ways. • Change a scene from the book into a play • Role play an interview with a character • Prepare a timeline for the events • Give a presentation about the book • Create a suitable cover for the book • Write a poem or rap about a character • Think of a story or book you have read. Which response described above would you use to present it? • Suggest other possible ways of presenting your response to a book or story. • Help students select suitable books for their book reports. Encourage them to keep a reading log of books they read. They can also form book clubs to talk about books. • Explain to students that they should only describe the main events in their report. They should not retell the plot in detail. DA Vary the way students present their response based on different abilities and learning styles.
