3 Work in pairs. Make notes for a speech in a debate. In your speech you can speak either FOR or AGAINST the statement.
1st point: Sports are better than video games. Why? Exercise good for you, helps you keep fit
4 Practise giving your speech to your partner.
When you give a speech, remember to • speak slowly and clearly • look at your audience • emphasise important words Make your speech sound interesting by varying the pace at which you speak. • try not to hesitate
5 Ask your partner to comment on your speech. Did you • make your points clearly? • provide reasons or evidence in support of your points?

6 Complete a self-assessment form. (See page 171) Include your self-assessment in your student journal .
• Students may need support when completing the For and Against chart. Brainstorm ideas with the class before students complete the chart in pairs or groups. • Students could present their speeches to their groups or to the class. • Provide other statements for students to discuss, e.g. ‘Students under 14 years should not be allowed to use social media sites.’
