Writing: expository report Write an expository report about ONE of these natural events. a) earthquakes b) hurricanes c) drought Follow the stages below to write your report. 1 Research: Find out more about the natural event you chose. • Decide which information sources you will use. • Prepare questions to guide your research. • Carry out your research and make notes about what you find. Remember that you can ask your teacher for advice. 2 Planning: Plan your report. Use an organiser like the one below to help you. Write the subject of your report in the middle of the web. Write a heading for each section in the surrounding bubbles.

3 Make notes for your report. Write notes about each heading using the information you found in your research.

5 Revise your report using the checklist below. Write or type a neat copy and give it to your teacher.
Checklist for an expository report. Have I: Written an introduction saying what the report is about? Organised the information in paragraphs? Written a topic sentence for each paragraph? Written a conclusion summarising the information in the report?
ICT Help students select suitable websites for their research. Fact Monster and sites with facts for kids (e.g. Earthquake Facts for Kids) are useful. Help them formulate questions for their research. • If students include this report in their writing portfolio , they should write a Reflection (see page 175) and complete a self-assessment (see page 171). DA Allow some students to include only two sections in their reports.
