Unit 10

Unit 10 What have I learnt? Can Do Skills

1 Read the paragraph below. Answer the questions.

Compared to hurricanes, thunderstorms only affect small areas. A typical thunderstorm is 15 miles in diameter and lasts for around an hour. The first sign of a thunderstorm is a distant rumble of thunder, followed by flashes of lightning. The intense heat of the lightning causes the surrounding air to expand. This creates a sound wave we hear as thunder. Light travels faster than sound, so we see the lightning before we hear the thunder. The closer you are to the thunderstorm, the shorter the gap between the lightning and the thunder. A thunderstorm creates heavy rainfall which can damage crops.
