HOW ROSIE BECAME A PART OF OUR FAMILY Our Pets Bring Unconditional Love

Animals do not ask for much; most just need a warm, safe, and sheltered place to live. Whether it be a dog, cat, bird, or even a guinea pig — our pets bring unconditional love to our lives and become a part of our families. The Oahu Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SPCA) is an incredible nonprofit animal welfare organization

committed to rescuing animals who suffer from abuse, neglect, and abandonment all over the island each day. Their no-kill philosophy truly strengthens their mission that every healthy, treatable animal will find their forever homes. This organization is near and dear to our hearts because it was where we adopted our sweet pup, Rosie. We adopted her the day after Thanksgiving last year, so she’s still relatively new to our family. We actually celebrated her first birthday in July! So, she’s still quite the puppy who is just our entire world. When the SPCA found Rosie’s litter, all her brothers and sisters were named after spices! So, Rosie’s full name is Rosemary, and some of her siblings were named Paprika, Pepper, and Cayenne. We kept her name because we thought it was best for her and nicknamed her Rosie.

human contact, but it also helps kids become more comfortable with reading. It’s a small thing, but it can make such a difference in the animals’ and the kids’ lives. My daughter, Julia, and her teammates from her volleyball team even participated in their towel drive! We collected old towels and blankets and brought those to the shelter, and it was an easy way to give back to the shelter. The SPCA also has a fostering program. We fostered two puppies this summer and had them for about two weeks before they were quickly adopted. They were a handful, but we were so happy to have them, and Rosie loved them as well. Their names were Cheech and Chong — which was hysterical — and the kids asked what their names meant, and I had to tell them not to worry about it! If you’re interested in becoming involved, they list plenty of volunteering, fostering, and career opportunities at OahuSPCA.org. Rosie is an absolute joy; she even has a few favorite places around the island. She loves Kailua Beach, Aweoweo Beach on the north shore, and Mililani Dog Park! We’re hoping to see all of you there with your furry friends, and who knows? You may see Rosie running along the beach, living her best paradise life!

We support all the other nonprofit organizations and nearby shelters, but the SPCA is the one we connect with the most because of our Rosie. They have so many wonderful programs that not only save the lives of thousands of animals but also improve the lives of the island’s people.

The SPCA has a program where kids come and read to the animals and help socialize them to

Halloween is all about letting the ghoul times roll, but monsters and ghosts aren’t the only things parents need to worry about this holiday. Most older kids don’t want an adult chaperoning — they want to venture off with their friends to enjoy the night all on their own. WHILE KEEPING SAFETY IN MIND HAVE A SPOOKY GOOD TIME

Here are a few safety tips so that you and your older kids can enjoy the spooky evening with no worries.

Plan a route and curfew.

Some older kids still love the nostalgia of trick-or-treating, or maybe they plan to pull some Halloween pranks with their friends. Whatever the reason may be, they may want to enjoy the evening without a parent. One of the best ways to make sure they’re staying safe is to plan a route and a curfew. Choose which routes you feel comfortable with them going on, either somewhere nearby or somewhere in the neighborhood. And choosing a curfew time is essential so you know when to expect their return. This way if something happens and you cannot reach them or they aren’t back in time, you have a general idea of where they can be on the route.

Why Presenting the Home Matters As a homeowner, when you decide it’s time to sell your house, there are many decisions you have to make to ensure you sell at the right price. How you present your home is a significant factor in how much you can get for it, and the best way to do it is by using furniture, lighting, and decor that many people can relate to. It also means arranging these items so the home evokes a strong emotional response from potential buyers, where they can picture their future. Helping buyers emotionally connect. Home staging is all about showcasing the foundation of the home. Updating the decor and furnishing with on-trend and inviting styles — particularly in living spaces, bedrooms, kitchens, and dining areas — can make a memorable impression on potential buyers. Once they are emotionally engaged, buyers will be more committed and willing to increase their offers. Staging increases the perceived value. Every home has at least one aspect that could potentially be better. It may be too small, awkwardly shaped, have corners that are unclear to define, and may not be airy or bright enough. That’s where staging comes in! Minimizing the negatives and accentuating the positives of a home can make a much better impression. When you remove any possible distractions, brighten a space, and strategically arrange furniture, you can play up a home’s unique features and SETTING THE ST

Pack the essentials.

Always make sure your child has their phone on them in case of an emergency, no matter if it’s to call you or an emergency line. You could even share locations so you’re able to track where they are or use another location tracking app like Life360 or FamiSafe that’s available on your devices. If they plan to stay out for a while, have your child take water bottles, flashlights, and even a small first-aid kit with them. They actually come in handy when exploring the Halloween night and the unexpected happens. Older kids deserve a bit of freedom, as long as they can do it responsibly. Consider these tips to make sure the night is trick- free and full of the best treats.

ISLAND-STYLE FRIED RICE

DIRECTIONS 1. In a saucepan over high heat, bring rice and water to a boil. Reduce heat to medium-low, cover, and simmer until rice is tender and liquid has been absorbed, about 20 to 25 minutes. Let rice cool completely. 2. In a large nonstick skillet over medium heat, place 2 tsp oil and brown the luncheon meat and sausage. Remove meat from skillet. Pour eggs into hot skillet, scramble and set aside. 3. Add 2 tbsp oil to the skillet and stir in rice. Toss the rice with hot oil until heated through and beginning to brown, about 2 minutes. Add the garlic powder, toss the rice for 1 more minute to develop the garlic taste, and stir in the luncheon meat, sausage, scrambled eggs, pineapple, and oyster sauce. Cook and stir until the oyster sauce coats ingredients, 2 to 3 minutes, then stir in green onions and serve. INGREDIENTS • 1 1/2 cups uncooked jasmine rice • 3 cups water • 2 tsp plus 2 tbsp canola oil • 1 12-oz can fully cooked luncheon meat (such as SPAM®), cubed • 1/2 cup sliced Chinese sweet pork sausage (lap Cheong) • 3 eggs, beaten • 1/2 tsp garlic powder • 1 8-oz can pineapple chunks, drained • 1/2 cup chopped green onion • 3 tbsp oyster sauce

4 Is It Allergies or Poor Air Quality?

3 REASONS WHY INDOOR AIR AFFECTS YOUR HEALTH IS IT ALLERGIES — OR POOR AIR QUALITY?

Third, test for radon, a naturally occurring radioactive gas. The EPA estimates that radon is the second-leading cause of lung cancer. Radon gas is inert, colorless, and odorless, and comes from the natural decay of uranium found in nearly all soils. While rising out of the ground, it can become trapped in your home. The solution: If your home has alarming levels of radon, installing a radon reduction system can pull the radon from the soil beneath your house and release it outside. You can also seal cracks in the floor and walls and improve air circulation with the steps above. According to the EPA, indoor air quality is almost always 2–5 times worse than outdoors. With the right steps, however, you won’t sneeze as much during the holidays. Great air quality will make your home feel like a healthy paradise.

When the weather starts getting cooler, more people spend time indoors — and that’s when the sneezing starts. But the problem isn’t always the season. Sometimes, it’s simply your home air quality. Let’s break down the worst threats, plus some potential solutions. First, biological pollutants love homes. According to the Environmental Protection Agency, up to half of all structures have damp conditions that may encourage molds and bacteria to grow. This can cause major allergic reactions, including asthma. Other biological pollutants include animal dander (minute scales from hair, feathers, or skin), dust mites, cockroach parts, and pollen.

insulation) contain nutrients that allow bio pollutants to grow. Firewood can also be a source of moisture, fungi, and bugs. Make sure your appliances (humidifiers, kerosene and gas heaters, and gas stoves) aren’t adding too much moisture into the air. You’ll be able to tell from musty odors, moisture on hard surfaces, or even water stains. Second, your home’s air circulation probably isn’t good enough. Most heating and cooling systems (including forced air heating systems) don’t bring fresh air into your house. Although cooking can smell delicious, it can introduce more smoke or air contaminants indoors. Hobbies like painting or welding can also add air contaminants. The solution: Because outdoor air tends to be cleaner, cracking open a window can do wonders to improve your air quality. Bathroom or kitchen fans that exhaust outdoors can bring outdoor air into your home.

The solution : Remove or relocate air quality threats. Dust and construction materials (wood, wallboard, or
