Unit 8

Writing: a story with dialogue Write a story about a brother and sister who quarrel. 1 Planning Make notes, using an organiser like this one or the ‘fishbone’ organiser on page 167. Setting Characters Problem Events Resolution

What kind of person is each character?

Why are they quarrelling?

How is the problem resolved?

Write the first draft of your story. Remember to include: • What the characters feel. • What they say.

2

3 Share your story with a partner. You can read it aloud or share it digitally. When you read your partner’s work ask yourself: • Does it include all the story elements? • Does the conversation sound natural? • Are people and places described vividly? • Tell your partner one thing you like and one thing that could be improved.

Revise your story.

4

Check your dialogue. Ask yourself: Have I: used words other than said?

started a new line when a new person speaks? used quotation marks and commas correctly?

5 Proofread your story then write or type it neatly.

CR You may allow students to include phrases in Creole when writing the words someone says. This may present a challenge if there is not an agreed spelling for these words.
