Language Reported speech (present tense)
Direct speech tells us the exact words which people say. Josh said, “I am late.” Reported speech reports what people said. Josh said that he was late. • Present simple changes to past simple: is è was are è were will è would • Pronouns change: I, he / she è we, they • No quotation marks. • We often use the word that after said , shouted , etc.
I am late.
1 Change these sentences from direct to reported speech. Example: “The cow is my project,” said Josh. è Josh said that the cow was his project.

Example: The Principal told her that he was very sorry. è “I am very sorry,” the Principal told her. 1 Our teacher asked us what our interests were. 2 I said I liked animals. 3 Seth said he played football every day. 4 Seth said he needed to stay fit because he wanted to be a professional footballer. 5 The teacher told them that she loved her garden. 6 She told us that she grew vegetables.
7 Kara told us that her dad kept chickens and a goat. 8 She said that she fed the chickens before school.
DA Exercise 1: Work with a group of students. Help them to identify the verb in the words being said, emphasising that it has to be changed. • Give practice in changing the verb and the pronoun by demonstrating with a simple sentence, such as Delia said, “I want an ice cream .” (Delia said she wanted…) and then providing sentences which follow a similar pattern: Max said, “I want…”, Grace and Max said, “We want…”, etc.
