Reported speech (past tense)
The past simple and the present perfect tenses change to the past perfect in reported speech: “Boy followed me,” Josh said. è Josh said that Boy had followed him to school.

Note that some of the pronouns also change: He told her, “ I have finished my project.” è He told her that he had finished his project.

Rewrite this conversation as reported speech. Mrs. Anthony: You learnt a lot about cows. Josh: Boy was a very good teacher. Mr. Redmond: My wife was frightened of your cow. Mrs. Redmond: Boy wanted to eat me! Josh: Cows only eat grass.
Matt said that he had helped Josh.
1 “The calf’s mother died,” Josh said. 2 Josh said, “I fed the calf on milk.” 3 “I spent the summer with him,” said Josh. 4 “I have trained him,” Josh said. 5 “I have stroked a cow,” said Brad. 6 “We enjoyed meeting Josh’s cow,” said Mrs. Anthony.
Reported speech (future tense)
The word will in direct speech becomes would in reported speech: “It will be over in no time,” said Josh. Josh said that it would be over in no time.
I will look after him.
I will clean up after my calf.

What did Josh say to his mother when he was given the calf?
You will learn to love Boy.
We will have a new member of the family.
DA Allow some students to answer fewer questions. • Extension: Practise reported speech by asking pairs of students to discuss a simple topic such as what they had for lunch. Then invite each partner to report one thing that their partner said.
