6 Punctuate the following sentences using commas. Example: At the mention of the word Boy the calf gave a little moo. è At the mention of the word , Boy , the calf gave a little moo. 1 His teacher Mrs. Anthony thought Josh was a trouble-maker. Review direct speech 5 Imagine that a student brings a large animal into your classroom. What does your teacher say? What do you say? Write what you both say using direct speech. Commas When writers want to tell us more about something they can add a word or phrase and use commas to keep it separate from the rest of the sentence. Boy stood there , unconcerned , flicking out his tongue.

2 Mr. Redmond the Principal was very angry. 3 Mr. Kelly Josh’s neighbour had a cow that gave birth to a calf. 4 The cow Boy’s mother died. 5 I fed him milk bought from the store until he was old enough to eat grass. 6 Everywhere I go even to school he wants to come with me. 7 The storekeeper Mr. Watson won’t allow him into the store. 8 The cow just like a dog has learnt to do tricks.
• Remind students that commas are also used in dates and addresses and in direct speech. • Direct speech extension: Ask students to write out what everybody illustrated in Exercise 4 said in direct speech, putting in quotation marks and commas. E.g. Josh said, “I will look after him.”
