Unit 10
7 Two commas are missing from each of these sentences. Rewrite them correctly. 1 This novel ‘A Cow Called Boy’ was written by C. Everard Palmer. 2 The story is funny sad clever and almost believable! 3 It is in my opinion quite an easy book to read. 4 The best part I think you will agree is when Josh rescues Boy. 5 His teacher the Principal his mother and the villagers are all proud of Josh in the end.
8 Here is the text of an e-mail. Write it out correctly, putting in commas where appropriate.
From: Seth To: Malik
Hi Malik, Josh my friend brought a cow to school! The cow is really smart! He kneeled sat and mooed when Josh told him to. My dog Rex can’t do that. Our teacher to begin with was horrified. Boys shrieked girls screamed and Mrs. Anthony fainted! Everything as far as I can tell finished badly. Seth
Word work: contractions
We use apostrophes to show that letters have been missed out: “Yes, ma’am,” said Josh. “That’s why I’m late.” Ma’am is the contraction of madam . That’s is the contraction of that is .
1 Edit this message. Put in the missing apostrophes.

• Remind students that contractions are very common in conversation. Invite them to find five contractions in the story on pages 114–115, then to read out some of the speech in the story substituting complete words for the contractions. Ask them in what way the text is now different.
