• Explain that the audience and purpose dictate how a text is written. Show students different texts (e.g. a recipe, a children’s book, television schedule) and ask what their audiences and purposes are. How are they different? ( size of print, size of illustrations, layout and design ) • See another formal letter in Sample compositions on page 172. • Portfolio: Include formal and informal letters in students’ portfolios. by putting a notice both in the library and in the school newsletter. You are a bookseller; I know you will understand the supreme importance of books and information and I am certain you will want to support us. Yours truly, Brandon Ebank I am writing from Hill End Primary School to ask you for your support. The school urgently needs to improve its library as a place for students to do research. This is very important in today’s world where even the youngest children need to know about the world outside the Caribbean. We need more non-fiction books, covering a range of subjects: music, sport, science and technology. Although we currently have a lot of non- fiction books, many of them were published many years ago and the information in them is sadly out-of-date and inaccurate. Also missing from our library are computers. The internet is a vital research tool and a major source of information on every topic imaginable. There is a computer room at the school but it is used all day by classes and cannot be used by students for their own projects. Without a computer in the library, our students are excluded from this world of information. If you make a donation, we will publicise Blake’s Bookstore’s generosity
