5 Rewrite these sentences in the past passive. Circle the subject of each sentence.
Example: Cars polluted the environment... (This sentence is active – the subject is ‘cars’.) è The environment was polluted by cars… (This sentence is passive – the subject is ‘the environment’.)
1 A German invented the printing press in 1440. 2 Tim Berners-Lee invented the internet. 3 He created the first website in 1991. 4 The bank donated a computer to the school.

• Point out to students that the passive voice is most often used in expository texts. See ‘West Indian Manatees’ (pages 24–25) as an example.
