Think of one thing that could be done to improve your school. Think how it would benefit students, teachers, parents or the community. Think what is required to make it happen, e.g. fundraising, parent involvement, etc.

4 Use your notes to write a formal letter to the Parent-Teachers Association of your school.
Greeting
Introduction
Introduce yourself and say why you are writing.
Start each paragraph with a topic sentence that makes a new point. Follow it with details that explain or support your point.
Paragraphs
Conclusion
Sum up your key points.
• Use strong, positive language to persuade the reader. • Give reasons to support your proposal. • Present one argument against your proposal and explain why that does not outweigh the arguments in favour.
5 Read your draft letter to a partner. Ask him or her to check that you have included everything asked for above.
6 Proofread your letter using the checklist on page 71.
• Questions 3 and 4: Refer students back to their response to question 10 on page 125. Ask them to use context clues to define the verb benefit . • Question 5: encourage students to say whether their partner’s writing is consistent in style and tone. Give examples of inconsistency for them to spot – to increase their awareness. • Study the sample formal letter and the sample argumentative text in Sample compositions pages 171 and 172.
