Word work: punctuation
The colon (:) is used to introduce lists. Re-use whatever you can: glass jars, plastic cutlery and plastic bags.

The semicolon (;) is used instead of a conjunction or full stop between two sentences which are closely connected. Hurricanes already damage people’s homes; stronger ones will bring more devastation. 3 Five of these sentences need semi-colons; rewrite them. 1 Walk or take a bus it’s better than going by car. 2 Use fans instead of air conditioning they use much less power. 3 Kim went to the library and borrowed two books about climate change. 4 She left her book in the yard it got wet. 5 I drink tap water bottled water is expensive and bad for the environment. 6 Dan wrote an e-mail the reply came within minutes. 4 Use your own ideas to complete the sentences. 1 I felt nervous; ______________.

• Colons are only used after complete sentences. For example, a colon is not needed after ‘saw’ in the following sentence: We saw a parrot, a jay and a hummingbird.
