Unit 12
Writing: expository text
There was a lot of litter on Hillhead Beach. It looked unattractive but it also presented a hazard to people and wildlife. Hillhead Primary School held a beach ‘clean-up’ day. Students, teachers and parents all spent the day picking up litter.
1 Discuss the pie chart which shows what items were found. • What was the most common item found on the beach? • What were the least common items found?
WB 6 p213
Items found on Hillhead Beach
tin cans
rubber items
plastic bottles
other plastics
2 Students made the notes below. What sort of garbage is dangerous and why?
Glass, bottle tops left on the beach
Plastic bags and bottles washed out to sea
Garbage
Birds feed small pieces to their young – may choke
Turtles, whales and other sea life swallow it – can’t digest it
Children tread on it / put in mouths
• As a class, discuss the information provided in the pie chart and on the concept map. Make sure students understand the consequences of litter on the beach. Tell them that a lot of plastic doesn’t degrade. • Cleaning up the environment can also be the topic of a class project in which students work together, planning, involving other people, publicising, carrying out and reporting on the clean-up. 3 Use the notes and the pie chart to write your report. Write about: • who took part in the clean-up day, when and where it took place • what was collected on the beach • why such garbage is dangerous • what we should do with our litter when we go to the beach • why the clean-up day was a good thing. 4 Revise and proofread your report.
