Can Do Skills
Read the text. Answer the questions. Bones Your bones give your body shape – without them you’d be a floppy mess! They also protect your organs; your skull protects your brain; your ribs protect your heart and lungs. When a bone breaks it is called a fracture. Most fractures affect the wrist and arms. When you fall over, it is a natural reaction to put out your hands to protect yourself. As a result, people very often break their wrists, forearms and above the elbow. Broken bones can heal themselves by covering both ends of the broken bone with new tissue which gradually hardens. Eventually the body produces new bone so that the break closes up. If all goes well a child’s bone will heal in half the time it takes an adult’s bone. Until the age of 20 your bones are focused on getting bigger and stronger so repairs happen quickly. Adults are not growing bone so their bones are repaired more slowly. 1 Why is it very common to break your wrist? 2 What is the main idea of paragraph 3? 3 Which of these statements is true? a) Your organs protect your bones. b) Adults’ bones heal more quickly than children’s bones. c) Broken bones can heal themselves. d) Our bones continue to grow until we are around 20 years old. 2 Choose the word that is CLOSEST IN MEANING to the underlined words from the passage. 1 It is a natural reaction. a) influence b) desire c) response 2 Bones can heal themselves. a) blend b) repair c) grow 3 New tissue which gradually hardens. a) abruptly b) steadily c) barely 4 Your bones are focused on getting bigger. a) concentrated on b) operated on c) uninterested in 3 Identify the cause and effect in these sentences.
