 There is one mistake in each sentence. Which word in each should have a capital letter?

A sentence is a group of words which includes a subject and a verb and expresses a complete idea. There are four different types of sentences: statements, questions, exclamations and instructions.

 In which three sentences are the capital letters and punctuation marks all correct? 1 worms do not have legs. 2 What do worms eat!

3 Worms can live for up to 10 years? 4 If a worm’s skin dries out, it will die. 5 They eat live and dead plants and tiny animals. 6 What do you know about worms? Quotation marks See pages 97, 117

When we write what people say, we put quotation marks around the words they said. Study where to put the other punctuation marks in Unit 8.

Choose the sentence in which the capital letters and punctuation marks are all correct. 1 a) Dad asked, “Have you seen my phone”? b) Dad asked “Have you seen my phone?” c) Dad asked, “Have you seen my phone?”

2 a) “Last time I saw it,” answered Jake. “it was on the table.” b) “Last time I saw it,” answered Jake, “it was on the table.” c) “Last time I saw it”, answered Jake. “It was on the table.” Commas See pages 98, 119, 120 Commas are used • to separate items in lists • to separate extra information added to a sentence • at the end of direct speech before the closing quotation mark • usually, in addresses and dates.

• Work through the explanations and exercises with the whole class. Students can be asked to devise questions about the topic to test others.
