We use the simple past tense for actions which were completed in the past. To make the simple past tense we usually add ‘ d ’ or ‘ ed ’ to the root verb: Many verbs have irregular forms in the simple past tense.

The present continuous tense tells us what is happening NOW. They are running. To form this tense we use the helping verbs am/is/are with the present participle of the main verb. The present participle is formed by adding ‘ -ing ’ to the verb.

The past continuous tense tells us what was happening in the past. They were waiting. To form this tense we use the helping verb was/were with the present participle of the main verb.
