New paragraph for each new idea Greeting Opening remarks Don’t begin every paragraph with ‘I’
I heard on the radio that you are looking for someone to be a junior reporter for one day and I believe that I could take on this role very successfully. I have always lived in Fort Thomas, so I am familiar with the local area and with the things that are important to the people who live here. Presently, I am in Standard 5 at St. Katherine’s Primary School. I am the class representative on the school council and last year I won the school speechmaking competition with a talk about the need for a proper library in the town. I help to run the school newsletter for which I frequently write articles. In the Christmas edition, I wrote an article about the achievements of the school basketball team. My teachers tell me that I am outgoing and confident and that I speak well in public. I am often chosen to show visitors around the school. My other interests are first aid, Brownies, reading and swimming. I do hope that you will consider me for an audition as I feel I could help to make young people enthusiastic about local issues.

Ask them to identify the audience and purpose of this letter and the informal letter (page 171), and to compare the two letters.
