Questions in the simple present tense

We use the helping verb do / does with the root verb to form questions in the present tense : Does a hummingbird eat worms? helping verb main verb Do manatees live more than ten years?

8 Construct questions from the following statements.

This KWL chart is focusing on the topic of snakes. • Write what you know about snakes in the ‘K’ column. • What do you want to know? Make up four questions, in the present tense, about snakes. Write them in the ‘W’ column.

• Exercise 8 extension: After constructing questions beginning with ‘Do / Does’, you may ask students to also make questions beginning with ‘What, ‘Who’, ‘When’, ‘Where’ or ‘How many’. (Who likes monkeys?) Tell students to keep their KWL chart from Exercise 9; they will be using it for the writing task on pages 30–31.
