Write your first draft. • Begin with an introduction that explains what you are going to write about. • Develop the topic you introduced in a series of paragraphs. Use the notes under each heading to write one paragraph. • Include a table or a diagram if it will make the information clearer. • Your final paragraph is your conclusion. It summarises the report or contains a closing comment. • Check your first draft against the checklist.

DA Some students may be told to write about just two of the headings (e.g. what it looks like and what it eats). • Students can also study the expository text in Sample compositions on page 175. • Portfolio: Remember that students’ portfolios should show evidence of process. Include examples of each stage of the writing process. They should also show progress over time. • At the end of each unit, have students fill in a self-assessment graphic organiser (page 168) or one of the end-of-unit organisers (page 164).
