Unit 1 What have I learnt? Can Do Skills
Read the text. Answer the questions. UNDERWATER VOLCANO ALIVE AND KICKING! Kick ‘em Jenny is a submarine volcano which lies 180m below sea level, 8km north of Grenada.
1
The volcano was first observed in 1939 when an eruption broke the sea surface and sent a cloud of steam and debris 275m into the air. It generated a series of tsunamis around two metres high on the coastlines of northern Grenada. A small tsunami also reached the west coast of nearby Barbados, where an unanticipated sea wave washed over a coastal road. It has erupted at least a dozen times since then but has not caused any reported deaths.
Volcanoes can be active, dormant or extinct. About 60 volcanoes on land are active each year but there are many more active volcanoes under the sea.
