To form negative sentences in the simple past we use did not + the root of the verb: Melissa answered. è Melissa did not answer.

To ask questions in the simple past, we use did + the root form of verb: Example: I saw Mr. Joe. è Did you see Mr. Joe?
1 Write four questions in the past tense to ask your partner about what he / she did yesterday. Example: Did you play football? Did you visit the moon? 2 Write answers to your partner’s questions. Present continuous tense
The present continuous tense tells us what is happening NOW. To form this tense we use the helping verbs am / is / are with the present participle of the main verb. The present participle is formed by adding ‘-ing’ to the verb. helping verb main verb He is still sleeping .

• Tell students that irregular past tense verbs do not follow any rules. The forms must be learnt. Have students collect irregular past tense forms and use them to create a wall chart. • Practise them regularly so students learn to recognise that an incorrect word does not ‘sound’ right. CR The present continuous tense can cause problems for Creole speakers where the helping verb is not generally used. Before attempting the exercises, revise the present tense of the verb ‘be’.
