The Birthday Outing
P.O. Box 043 Bridgetown Barbados 5th June, 2021
Dear Grandpa, Thank you for your letter offering to take me out for my birthday. I am glad you are coming to stay and it will be very special to spend a day just with you. You gave me two options, St. Nicholas Abbey, a 17th century house and garden, and Harrison’s Cave. It’s hard to choose because both would be fun. On one hand, you know I’m interested in history but on the other hand, I want to know more about geology (that includes caves and rock formations). I looked up Harrison’s Cave online. There are photos of stalactites which hang from the roofs and stalagmites which emerge from the ground. The website talks about ‘awesome caverns and breath-taking formations’. Then I talked to a friend who has been there. She said the best thing was ‘the great hall’ which is enormous. A little tram took her round the cave and big water drops fell onto her head! I have thought about it carefully. I have been to St. Nicholas Abbey before with my school whereas the cave will be a ‘first’. Also, I want to go to the cave because it sounds weird and I’ve never been underground. Dad and I will come to the airport to meet you on June 17th. I hope you have a good journey from London. Your grandson Nathan

Running-footer Ask what a stalagmite and a stalactite are. Tell students to work out the meaning from the context by re-reading the letter and looking at the photograph and the caption on the opposite page. Students can also look up the words in an encyclopaedia or online. • When reminding students about the features of an informal letter you may want to also look at the one in Sample compositions on page 171. • Hello Nathan What a great letter! It only arrived today so you’ll understand why I’m replying by e-mail. Harrison’s Cave it is then! J Both options would be fun but I’m delighted with your choice. There are no caves in London whereas there is a great deal of history here! It will be great to come back to Barbados although I’m not looking forward to the long flight or the jet lag. L See you next week. Love Grandpa
