Speaking and listening Work in pairs. Role play a telephone conversation. Student A wants to make a school visit to Merville. Student B works at Merville and answers the questions. Student A: Ask when the house is open. Ask a question about the museum and another about the petting farm. Student B: Answer the questions. If the answer is not on the leaflet, make up an answer.

May students eat their packed lunch in the restaurant?

I’m afraid not. Only food which has been bought in the restaurant can be eaten there.

CR Speaking and listening: Discuss whether students would speak in Creole or Standard English in this situation. Move around the class, observing role plays. Ask selected pairs to present the role play to the class in Standard English. Encourage students to recognise variations from SE in their own and others’ speaking. • Extension: Practise making phone calls in different situations using formal and informal language.
