6 Combine some of the sentences to make this text more interesting to read.
Example: Turtles are endangered so they are protected by law.
People like to eat the eggs of the leatherback turtle. It is endangered. The turtle digs a hole in the sand. It buries its eggs. A female may lay 150 eggs. Only a few will live to be adults. The leatherback turtle’s main food is jellyfish. It will also eat fish and other marine creatures. They are protected. They get caught in fishing nets.

• Demonstrate to students that joining short sentences with conjunctions makes a piece of writing sound better. When they have completed Exercise 5 ask them to read out both the original and their re-written versions and compare them. Exercise 5 extension: Discuss whether the longer sentences students have made are compound or complex sentences. DA Exercise 6: Arrange for some students to work in a mixed-ability pair. Alternatively, work with a small group yourself, trying out different ways of introducing conjunctions and discussing the effects.
