Word work Synonyms

Compound words are made by joining two words together.

1 Each of the words in bold is used in the flyer on page 45. Transitional words

Transitional words and phrases are very useful. They help us to: • connect sentences and paragraphs • make clear the relationship between ideas • make our writing flow smoothly. Each type of text has its own typical transitional words.

2 We often use these transitional words when we are comparing and contrasting things and people. Which ones did Nathan use in his letter?

•  Word work: Point out that words often have more than one synonym. They all have different ‘shades of meaning’ . Which one you choose depends on the context in which it is used. Give them a time limit and then compare how many compound words each group has written down. • Transitional words or phrases link sentences and paragraphs together smoothly so that there are no abrupt jumps or breaks between ideas.
