Suffixes
A suffix is a word part added to the end of a root word to change its meaning. Often the suffix also changes the part of speech: equip è equipment innovate è innovative verb noun verb adjective 1 Look at each of these words from Stay Safe Online (page 54). 1 appearance 5 latest 2 hurtful 6 influential 3 safely 7 information 4 advertisement 8 dangerous
1 What is its root word? What is its suffix? Example: reliable è root word – rely, suffix – able
2 What part of speech is the word? What part of speech is the root? Example: reliable è 1 adjective 2 rely = verb 2 Add suffixes to these nouns to form adjectives. Example: help è helpful 1 adventure 2 music 3 athlete 4 disaster 5 beauty 6 inflate 7 child 8 home Suffixes to learn Forming adjectives -able reasonable -al -ful -ic romantic -ish
