Writing 1: a report Write a report, telling young children how to stay safe when playing in the sea. 1

Research the topic online. What advice is given?

Brainstorm with a partner. Ask yourselves: • What can be fun and what can be dangerous when young children go in the sea?

2 Write notes on a word web. Create headings to organise your ideas. Each heading can be the main idea of a paragraph. 3 Write the title ‘Playing in the Sea – How to Stay Safe’. Write your advice in paragraphs: 1 introduction, saying what the report is about 2 the dangers 3 what children must do and why 4 what children must not do and why 5 conclusion, summarising what the report is about.

4 Read what you have written to a partner. Listen carefully to your partner and use the revision checklist.

Peer edit and revise

5 Tell your partner two things you like about the writing and one or two things that could be improved. 6 Revise your work. Then proofread it. Revision checklist Do the first few sentences tell you what the text is about? Are the ideas clear? Do the paragraphs each focus on one topic? Are any ideas repeated? Are all the points relevant to the topic?

Type your first draft and share it electronically with your partner.

Use digital technology to design and print your poster. Illustrate it with clip art.

Writing 2: a poster Use the key points from your report to create a poster to be displayed in primary schools. 1 Think about audience and purpose. 2 Use few words, bright colours and large text size.

• Follow the writing process as explained on page 163.

CR Remind students to look out for variations from Standard English in their own and others’ writing. Recognise when they are appropriate (for example, in direct speech, quotations or proverbs) and when they should be revised. • At the end of a unit, encourage students to reflect on their learning . Invite them to discuss in pairs and to respond to these questions in their journal: What I found most interesting was… / A question I still have is… / What I found out that I did not know before is…
