Read this paragraph. The moon stays the same shape although it appears to change. We only see the part of the moon that is lit by the sun. When the dark side of the moon is facing Earth we cannot see it. We see just the thin slice that is illuminated. This is called a new moon. As the moon goes round the Earth we see more of the bright side.
