They took no notice of Miss Lola who leant out of her window to yell, “My baby’s bawling because she can’t sleep. This has got to stop!” They took no notice of Mrs. Dee who shook her fist and cursed when the pushcart narrowly missed a customer who jumped in fright and knocked over her pile of carefully arranged mangoes. “Look what you have done!” she screamed. “You have ruined my display!” “Why is she shouting at me?” thought Clive. “She should be shouting at her customer.” Then Mr. Taylor came along. He didn’t roar or yell. He came close to Clive and whispered in his ear. “This is dangerous, Clive. What if a car comes up while these children are going down?” Clive took notice of Mr. Taylor. “I should have thought about safety,” he told himself. Next time the

pushcart came back up the hill, he picked up his sign and threw it in the cart. “All done!” he announced to the children still clamouring for a ride; and he strode home with heavy pockets and a light heart. Tomorrow, he’d find another, safer location for his business.

• Help students to see that there is a problem and a solution at the beginning of the story (Mom lost her job; Clive finds a way to make money). However, the solution (pushcart rides) causes a second problem (danger) so Clive finds a second solution (new location).
