Unit 6
Possessive pronouns
The words mine, yours, his, hers, its, ours and theirs are possessive pronouns. They are used instead of nouns to write sentences in a shorter way: This guitar is not my guitar. è This guitar is not mine.
We use reflexive pronouns when the subject and the object of the verb are the same: The fairmaid blamed herself for losing her comb. We make reflexive pronouns by adding the suffix self (singular) or selves (plural) to an object pronoun. 2 Copy the sentences. Choose the correct words to complete them. Example: This is my recorder . The violin is mine as well. (my / mine) 1 I can’t find _______ (my / mine) boots. 2 These socks are _______ (her / hers) so those must be _______ (your / yours). 3 These glasses are not _______ (my / mine). 4 That’s not _______ (their / theirs) book. It’s _______ (our / ours). 5 _______ (My / Mine) guitar is bigger than this one. 6 _______ (My / Mine) wife says this pen is _______ (her / hers). 7 There are two hats. _______ (Your / Yours) is larger than _______ (my / mine). 8 We recognise that dish. It’s _______ (our / ours). 1 Replace each of the underlined phrases with the appropriate possessive pronoun: mine, yours, his, hers, its, ours or theirs . 1 Baby-K’s voice was heard. Our voice was not. Her voice was not. 2 My trees were cut down. The trees of my neighbours were not. 3 My brother’s friends were nice to me. My sister’s friends were not. 4 Your book is about the environment. My book contains folk tales. 5 The future belongs to the children. Baby-K said, “It’s my future .” 6 The fairmaid said to the girl, “The golden comb is my comb .”
