Word work: homographs
Homographs are words which are spelt the same but which have more than one meaning. You can work out which meaning is intended by reading the whole sentence: Kit is a fan of Grace Nichols. è fan = someone who likes a person or thing a lot It was very hot so she turned on the fan . è fan = source of water

Writing: Written response to reading Choose a poem or a story that you have read and enjoyed. Copy and complete the Reading Response chart on page 165. Then, either 1 Write a book report. or 2 Write a poem in response to the ideas, events or characters.
• Writing: Help students select suitable books, based on their interests, for their book reports. Encourage them to keep a reading log of books they read and to note their responses to literature in their journals. You might also help to form a book club to talk about books.
