2 Brainstorm words and ideas for your poem.
• Which words best describe it? • What do you think about it? • How do you feel about it?
3 Select your best ideas and use them to write a poem. • It doesn’t have to rhyme. • Try repeating words and phrases to show the parts you feel strongly about. • Use at least one of these poetic devices. simile metaphor onomatopoeia personification alliteration
Peer edit and revise Share a digital copy with your partner or read it aloud. 1 Listen carefully to your partner’s poem. 2 Has your partner used • interesting vocabulary? • at least one poetic device? Tell your partner what you like about the poem and suggest one thing that could be improved.

3 Listen to the comments your partner makes. 4 Make changes to your poem to make it better.
5 Write out your poem neatly or type and print it.
With your teacher’s help, produce a class collection of poems for others to read.
• Students who are writing a book report can study the advice on page 18 and the book report sample on page 169. ICT If students’ poems have been typed, maybe they can be published as an anthology on the school website. • Encourage students to select and read, independently, texts in line with their interests.
