Speaking and listening: giving directions 1 Student A: Think of a place in the school. Don’t tell your partner where it is but give him or her instructions how to get there. 2 Student B: Listen carefully to your partner’s instructions. Try to work out where your partner is telling you to go. Tell him / her. Were you correct? Were the instructions clear? 3 Student B: Tell Student A one thing that was good about the instructions and one way in which they could be improved. 4 Swap roles and repeat.

• Tell students that commands are also called imperatives. • With students, brainstorm what other sorts of instructions they may come across, e.g. recipes, how to build flat-pack furniture, how to do DIY projects, how to operate technological devices or household equipment; how to play their favourite game. • Ask students to bring examples into school. Help them to see that these have the same features.
