I do lots of talking and he does none. So it seemed only right that we don’t get on.
CARL:
But he’s good at some things and I’m good at others. So we can work together like true true brothers! Now listen to us. ‘Cos we’ve seen the light. To co-operate is better than to fight.

STEFAN:
2 SAY ... what you feel is the problem.
From the back of the room, Mrs. Lewis was laughing and clapping with the rest of the class. “Well done!” she congratulated them. “I’m really impressed. You’ve not only told us about co-operation, you’ve also shown us how it works.”
3 LISTEN ... to what the other person says.
This poster is the joint work of Carl and Stefan 4 THINK ... of solutions that will satisfy both of you. If you still can’t agree, ask someone else to help you work it out. Co-operation is better than confrontation!
1 Why do Carl and Stefan quarrel at the beginning of the story? 2 Who helped them to work together? 3 In what way did the two boys co-operate in the end? 4 Stefan’s face was getting hot and his hands were clammy. How did Stefan feel? 5 Which of these statements describes Stefan? Which describes Carl? a) He speaks confidently. c) He is innovative. b) He is artistic. d) He has a good sense of rhythm. 6 Carl says, begrudgingly, “When you talk, everyone listens.” What does begrudgingly mean? 7 We’ve seen the light means the boys have: a) put the light on in the classroom c) worked in the sunshine b) understood the truth d) promised to behave better in future. 8 There are four points on the boys’ poster. Which do you think is the most important and why? 9 If Mrs. Lewis had just shouted at the boys when they fought, how would the story have been different? 10 Do you think co-operation is better than confrontation? Why do you think that?
• Ask students what part of speech the words ‘begrudgingly’ and ‘hesitantly’ are. • Ask them to think of adverbs which could be used to describe how Dad speaks and how Mrs. Lewis speaks at the end of the story. • Question 5: Discuss what it means to be innovative . • Encourage students to find evidence in the story to support their answers.
