Language: conjunctions

We use and to join two sentences. We can collect paper. We can reuse glass jars. We can collect paper and we can reuse glass jars. The new sentence has only one capital letter and one full stop.

Join these sentences with and . 1 Rick picked up the litter. He swept the floor. 2 Grandpa used compost. His vegetables grew well. 3 I picked some tomatoes. We ate them for dinner. 4 On Saturday I tidied my room. I helped Mommy.

We use and to add extra information. I dropped the jar and it broke.

We can also use but to join sentences. I dropped the jar but it did not break. But tells us something different or surprising.

Use and or but to join these sentences.

Example: Amy fell over but she did not hurt herself.

She did not hurt herself. She put it in her basket. We played cricket. It was closed. We write stories. He did not hear me.

1 Amy fell over. 2 Mom bought some fruit. 3 We went to the beach. 4 Rick went to the shop. 5 In class we read books. 6 I called my friend.

and but

3 Use your own ideas to complete the sentences. 1 On the weekend I _________________ and I _________________. 2 I looked for the book but __________________.

•  You may wish to tell your students that words like ‘and’ or ‘but’ are called conjunctions. DA  Exercise 2: Give support to some students. Read out each sentence first with ‘and’ then with ‘but’. Discuss which one is correct and why. •  Extension: Students can write more of their own sentences with ‘and’ and ‘but’.
