We use commas between items in lists. The world has many forests, rivers and oceans. We do not usually put a comma before and in a list. Write these sentences with commas. 1 Birds monkeys and snakes live in the forests. 2 We need to protect animals birds and fish. 3 Ants bees and butterflies are insects. 4 We grow tomatoes dasheen yams and sweet potatoes. 5 They sell guava melon apples and pineapple in the market. 6 I ate fried chicken rice and beans for lunch.

DA Commas in lists: Students can write lists of more than three items, e.g. things which can be recycled. • Allow some students to write the first two or three examples from each exercise according to ability. • Extension: Some students can make their own sentences with ‘and’, ‘but’ and ‘ because’.
