Unit 15 The Speech
Let’s talk Do you help at home? What do your brothers and sisters do? Do you think this is fair? Reading
The Speech Last week the students in Akim’s class learnt how to give a speech. They practised in pairs. On Monday some of them were ready to talk to the class. “Who will go first?” asked Mr. Adams. “We will,” said Jade and Shelly. They stood up in front of the class. “We’re going to talk about helping at home,” said Jade. Some of the boys groaned. “Shhhh!” said the girls. “Women always do more than men,” began Jade. “My mother
goes out to work, but when she comes home she cooks the dinner and looks after my little sister. My older brother doesn’t help. He sits in the chair and reads the newspaper.” “My brother is just the same,” Shelly went on. “He never does anything to help. His room is always untidy. In the evening he plays on the computer or watches TV. I have to help Mom to clear the table and wash the dishes. That isn’t fair. I like playing on the computer too. We think that everyone should help at home.”
• Let’s talk: Remind students that when they express an opinion, e.g. whether something is fair or not , they must be able to justify it. • Reading: Ask students to predict from the picture what is happening in the classroom. Read the title with them and ask students for their opinions on the topic. As you read, compare their opinions with those expressed in the speech.
