Unit 16 Grace Goes to School

Let’s talk Imagine that another student in your class was ill and could not come to school for a while. What could you do to help this student? Reading Grace Goes to School

Look at this picture of my class. That’s me in the middle of the front row. I look like everyone else, don’t I? I am not the same as the other students. I am disabled. When I was born, there was something wrong with my spine. This means I can only walk a few steps at a time. I did not go to school until I was seven years old. My mother taught me at home. In the evenings my brother Kirk and my sister Brianna told me what they had learned at school. On my seventh birthday, my mother had a surprise for me. “Your uncle has bought a wheelchair for you, Grace,” she said. “When you know how to use it, you can go to school by yourself.”

• Let’s talk: This unit includes a story about a student with a disability. Take the opportunity to discuss how students can help and respect one another. • Reading: Get students to predict what the story is about from the pictures. • As they read, ask them to identify the narrator . Ask: Who is telling the story?
