The cause is WHY something happens. The effect is WHAT happens. CAUSE EFFECT Grace cannot walk very far. She could not go to school. 1 Discuss the cause and effect in these sentences. 1 When Grace had a wheelchair she was able to go to school. 2 Grace felt sad because she could not do sports. 3 Grace enjoys sports because she can referee matches. 2 Read these sentences. State what the effect might be. 1 Josh fell over during the football game. 2 Anna did not look before she crossed the road. 3 It rained heavily all night. • Cause and effect: Point out that a cause often has more than one effect, e.g. Josh fell over, he hurt his leg, he could not play in the next match etc. • Speaking and listening: After discussing the three problems on this page, students can suggest other problems. Select two or three of their problems. Pairs suggest solutions. Compare problems and solutions around the class.
