( looking in the fridge) It isn’t in here. Where do you think Mommy has hidden it? M aybe it’s in the cupboard. ( looking in the cupboard ) Yes, here it is. W ow! It looks delicious. I’m going to try a little piece of the icing. Nobody will know. ( She takes the cake out of the cupboard .)

KELLIE:
JOEL:
Be careful! You’re going to drop it.
( Kellie slips and drops the cake .) JOEL:
( angrily ) Now look what you’ve done! Mommy will be furious.
(Grandma appears in the doorway.) GRANDMA: W hat’s going on, children? I heard a noise. JOEL: W e were looking at the cake and Kellie dropped it. GRANDMA: O h dear! We can’t eat the cake now. It’s ruined. KELLIE: I’m really sorry, Grandma. I didn’t mean to drop it. GRANDMA: ( thinks for a moment ) I have an idea. We won’t tell Daniel about the
cake right now. We don’t want to upset him on his birthday. I’ll go to our neighbour’s house. She’ll help me make another cake. No one will know the difference. JOEL AND KELLIE: ( together ) Thank you, Grandma. GRANDMA: J oel, help your sister clear up the mess. Then go back to your room, both of you.
• Talk about the picture. Discuss the body language of the characters. What does this indicate about the way they feel? • As you read the play with students, get them to predict what will happen next. Discuss the characters’ reactions, e.g. What did you expect Grandma to do when she found the children in the kitchen?
