Unit 4: Assessment (page 35) Read the story to your students the first time without stopping. Let them look at the questions, then read it again, pausing from time to time to ask questions. Once, Lion was sleeping in his den, tired after a day’s hunting. Nearby, Mouse was scampering around in search of food. He ran right over Lion’s leg. Lion woke up with a start. He seized Mouse in his great paw and growled, “How dare you wake me! I’m going to eat you for breakfast.” “Please don’t eat me!” squeaked the terrified Mouse. “If you let me go, I will do you a good turn one day, I promise.” Lion thought for a moment. “Mouse is so small it’s hardly worth eating him,” he said to himself. So, he let Mouse go. A few days later, when Lion was walking in the forest, he got caught in a hunter’s net. He rolled and roared, but could not get free. Hearing Lion, Mouse came to see if he could help. With his sharp teeth, he quickly bit a hole in the net and Lion escaped. So, you see: One good turn always deserves another. Unit 5: Listen up! (page 36) Explain that in the text students are about to hear, the School Principal, Mrs Godfrey, is talking to the students at Assembly. Good morning students. Welcome back after the holidays. This term I want us to work together to make our school a place we can be proud of. You can all help by keeping your classrooms tidy. During the holiday, we put new pegs and shelves in every classroom. Please hang your sports bags on the pegs and put your books away on the shelves at the end of the lesson. I don’t want to see any litter in your classrooms. We have provided bins for you. Put waste paper in the recycling bin. Any other waste can go in the large black bin. I’m relying on each one of you to play his or her part. Unit 6: Assessment (page 49) Read the poem aloud a few times to your students. Unit 8: Speaking and listening (page 60) Explain that you are going to read the text of an email that Kellie sent her friend Lisette in reply to her letter on the previous page. Hi Lisette Thanks for your letter. You asked me if I had visited any interesting places in the USA. Last week my parents took us all on a boat trip on the river. We took a picnic with us because we were out all day. We saw a lot of brightly coloured birds on the river banks, and there were turtles swimming in the river. The captain told us there were crocodiles there too, but we did not see any. My brother said he saw a shark but I don’t believe him.
I miss you all, so please write soon.
Kellie
Unit 9: Assessment (page 72) Sense and Senses I have five senses good and true Through them I know just what to do; My eyes see all there is around My ears hear every single sound, My tongue can taste drink or food My nose can smell things bad and good, My skin and nerves feel all I touch. Through these five senses I learn so much. Suzanne Francis-Brown Unit 10: Speaking and listening (page 75) Tell your students they will hear an announcement from a local radio station. It’s going to be a busy weekend in Long Beach. It’s their annual music and dance festival. It opens on Saturday morning with a parade through the town. Later, school students will compete in a dance contest. In the evening, you can dance on the beach to the sound of a reggae band. On Sunday morning, the St John’s church choir will sing gospel music, then there will be a lunchtime barbecue at the cricket club. The festival will end with a steel band concert at the cricket ground. Everyone is welcome to come and join the fun.
