Unit 4 Tortoise Tries to Fly
Tortoise Tries to Fly Once, Tortoise lived by a river near a cliff. He had a shell which was as smooth as a pebble. The birds often flew down and looked at themselves in Tortoise’s shell. “My shell is like a mirror,” Tortoise boasted. He watched the birds flying high in the sky. He was envious of them. “I wish I could fly like you,” he sighed. One day, Eagle swooped down. “I am having a party for all the birds,” he said. “Would you like to come?” “Yes, I would, but I can’t fly,” said Tortoise sadly. Let’s talk Which stories do you know about animals? Which one do you like best? Why? Reading
Crow heard him. “I have an idea,” he said. “We will give you some of our feathers. If you stick them to your shell, you will be able to fly.” Soon, Tortoise had a huge pile of feathers. When he stuck them on, he looked very strange indeed. “How do I look?” he asked the birds. “Like one of us,” said Crow. “Let’s go to the top of the cliff,” said Flamingo. “Jump!” said Macaw. Tortoise was scared. He shut his eyes and jumped.
• Let’s talk: After students discuss their favourite animal stories, ask them what they learn from these stories to introduce the concept of stories with a ‘moral’. Explain that a story with a moral is one that teaches us a lesson. • Pre-reading: Tell students to look at the pictures. What can they learn from them about the story and the characters from it? CR You may wish to retell this familiar story to your students in Creole before they read it in Standard English.
