Anansi Stories

Once, Tiger was king of the forest. Even the stories the animals told were called the Tiger Stories. Anansi wanted the stories for himself. He went to see Tiger. “Many things are named after you, Mr. Tiger. Nothing is named after me,” he said. “Please let the animals call the stories the Anansi Stories.” Tiger decided to play a trick on Anansi. “Bring me Mr. Snake alive, and I will give you the stories.” The other animals laughed. How could a little spider bring back Snake alive? Anansi thought carefully. The next day he went to see Snake. “Good morning, Mr. Snake,” he said. “Everyone says that you are as long as the branch of a tree. I don’t believe them.” “Why not?” said Snake. “I am longer than that bamboo.” Anansi cut a long branch of bamboo. “Stretch out beside this branch,” he said. Snake lay down beside the branch.

• Pre-reading: Before starting to read, get your students to predict the story from the pictures. Encourage them to draw inferences from the pictures, e.g. What does the picture tell us about Tiger? • Use the first part of the text as a listening comprehension exercise. See the note on page 51.
