If the verb ends in a consonant followed by ‘y’, change the ‘y’ to ‘i’ and add ‘ ed ’. carry è carried : Anansi carried Snake to Tiger. If the verb ends in a vowel followed by ‘y’, just add ‘ ed ’. stay è stayed: Snake stayed in his hole all day.

• Doubling letters: You may wish to explain that for verbs consisting of consonant + vowel + consonant we double the last letter before adding ‘ed’. CR The past tense is used differently in Creole and Standard English. Give examples in both Standard English and Creole for your students to compare.
