Word work: root words
Some words are made up of more than one part. stays = stay + ‘s’ stayed = stay + ‘ed’
staying = stay + ‘ing’
Stay is a root word . ‘s’, ‘ed’ and ‘ing’ are suffixes . We add suffixes to change the meaning of words.

2 Each of you writes about the character you chose. When you have finished, show your work to your partner. 3 Tell each other what you like about the writing. Discuss how you could make it better. 4 Make changes to your writing to improve it.
• Writing: After students write their first draft, revising is the next part of the writing process. After writing, students can evaluate each other’s work. To guide the process, tell them to find one thing they like and suggest one thing to improve. They can then go back to their work and revise it. • Use the pre-writing graphic organiser on page 144 with students before they write their stories.
