Complete the story with was or were . Rick was at the sports ground. It ________ midday and his friends ________ late. Then he saw them. They ________ hot and tired. “Where ________ you?” he asked. “I ________ worried.” “We ________ on the bus. It ________ very slow.”

We use ‘did’ with the root form of the verb in past tense questions: Where did the students go for their class visit? Did they enjoy the visit?

3

Write questions. Example: Where did the students eat their lunch? 1 where / the students eat their lunch 2 what / you do in the gardens 3 / they see parrots there

WB 3 p55

4 / you go to the beach last Saturday 5 / Lisette write a letter to her friend 6 when / Kelly go to the USA

We use did with the root form of the verb for negative sentences in the past. We did not have time to see all the trees and plants.

4

Write negative sentences. Example: The children did not see the parrots in the garden. 1 The children saw the parrots in the garden.

WB 3 p56

2 Kelly wrote a letter to Lisette. 3 She returned to her old school. 4 Mrs. Turner took the children to the gardens again. 5 We played under the trees. 6 I went out on the boat with my brother.

•  Remind students that the root form of the verb is the main part of the verb. We can add endings to the base form to change its meaning, e.g. ask – asked . •  Get students to make up questions to ask a friend who went to visit cousins on another island.
