Let’s talk Have you ever received an invitation from a friend or family member? What did this person invite you to do? Reading

The Invitation When Daniel came home from work on Friday, his father had some exciting news for him. “Your Uncle Kevin has sent me an email. Come and take a look.” Daniel ran into the living room, where his father was working on his computer. This is what he read on the screen.

To: gary@jacksonsathome.com From: kevin@cricketfan.com Subject: Tickets! Hi Gary, How is everyone? We are all fine here.

Great news! Last week I entered a competition in The Daily News. I received a letter today telling me that I had won first prize - three tickets for the President’s Cup match next Saturday. I know you love cricket, so would you like to come with me? Bring Daniel too. It’s time for him to start watching some good cricket. Best wishes to all the family. Your brother Kevin

When Daniel finished reading, there was a broad smile on his face. “Well,” said his father. “What shall I tell your Uncle Kevin?”

• Reading: Study the layout of the email and the information provided at the top. Compare this with the layout of the letter in Unit 8. • Tell students to skim the email to find out Uncle Kevin’s purpose in writing it. Explain that skimming means looking quickly over a text to find out the main idea .
